Members of the Rose City Rollers have entered Red Bull’s Flügtag event all in the name of raising $10,000 for the Sheri Hildreth Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation. Two years ago, Rose City Rollers donated $3,000 to the foundation from the proceeds of their season championship bout.
Sol Train, Nonamey, TeqKillYa, Rectifier, and Kevlar Enforcement have chosen to risk their lives by launching a Flügtag flying machine into the mighty Willamette River on August 2nd, 2008 at Tom McCall Waterfront Park. Not that risking their lives in the Roller Derby oval of punishment isn’t enough, the group just feels very strongly about supporting an organization as important as the SHOC Foundation, a Portland-based non-profit that raises funds for ovarian cancer research via their annual Empowerment Walks and their sister site Hats of Empowerment.
August 2nd will be a busy day for the team as they first participate in the Empowerment Walk, which begins at 8am sharp in Gladstone, then scream on up to Tom McCall Waterfront Park and Red Bull’s Flugtag to prep their (non?)flying contraption and make Portland history!
Spokes-skater “TeqKillYa” says “We are looking for your support in voting for us, helping us with building material via donation and/or discounts, cheering us on, and supporting a great cause like the SHOC Foundation while laughing your ass off as we fly into the sun, hopefully.”
“Its not every day a group of people are going to throw themselves off the end of a pier to raise money …” laughs SHOC Foundation founder Sherie Hildreth “… and ‘The Funky 4 + 1 More‘ are not only going to do that but have challenged themselves with a goal of donating $10,000 to the foundation!”
The Rose City Rollers were founded in August ‘04 by a small band of gritty, gutsy, nostalgic gals who decided to dust off their ole quad skates and hit the rink. Since
then, the League’s endured quite a metamorphosis, changing composition & location multiple times. “The Rose City Rollers will prove to be a lethal combination of
brains, brawn, budding skill and spirit. . .oh, and a bit of PBR,” said Roller Girl November Pain.
The Sherie Hildreth Ovarian Cancer Foundation was founded to raise awareness and to fund research for Ovarian Cancer. The Third Annual event consists of a 10K Run/Walk, 5K Run/Walk and 1-Mile Family Fun Walk in Gladstone, Oregon. They are thrilled that in the past three years we were able to donate over $107,000. These proceeds benefit OHSU Cancer Institute, one of the nation’s leading research centers specializing in Ovarian Cancer. The Sherie Hildreth Ovarian Cancer Empowerment Walk is an opportunity for families and businesses, as well as other survivors and supporters from surrounding communities, to come together for the cause.
